A product listing looks right, the seller has answered your questions, and purchasing wants to pay. Then the payment instruction arrives from someone else: a buying agent, a collection company or a salesperson with a personal account. Before choosing a payment method, work out whose order you are buying and whose invoice your business will settle.

Alibaba Group describes 1688 as a domestic wholesale marketplace. That description does not tell you whether a particular seller can export, accept your proposed payment or provide the documents your buyer needs. Those are questions for this order, not assumptions to make from the platform's name.

This is a fictional, generalised purchasing situation. This article is general information, not legal, tax or investment advice. Payment review does not guarantee supplier performance or platform protection.

Start with the contracting seller

Save the listing, specification, agreed quantity and quotation. Ask for the seller's registered company name and a purchase document identifying the business responsible for the goods. Compare that name with the proposed invoice issuer and receiving account. A shop display name alone is not enough to explain the relationship.

Ask who will arrange export and which company will issue the relevant commercial documents. Do not assume a domestic quotation includes international freight, export handling or destination charges. Put the agreed scope in writing, including the point at which responsibility passes between the seller, your agent and your freight provider.

Choose the route before funding it

If you want to pay through the platform, check the payment options shown for your actual account and order. Confirm eligibility and the applicable order terms through the platform's official help channel. Do not rely on an old tutorial, a borrowed login or a claim that every overseas buyer can use the same checkout method.

If a buying agent will place the order, establish whether the agent is purchasing on your behalf or reselling the goods to you. Those arrangements produce different purchase records. Agree who holds the platform order, who can raise an order dispute and what records the agent must share. The Yiwu agent guide covers the same distinction for purchases collected from several sellers.

A separately invoiced company payment is another arrangement to review, not a platform checkout shortcut. Ask the seller whether it will accept that payment against the specified order and what happens to any existing platform order. Do not describe an off-platform transfer as covered by platform terms without checking those terms for the transaction.

Give the agent a bounded instruction

An agent's payment request should separate goods, service charges, domestic delivery, inspection and any other agreed costs. Ask for the exchange-rate basis if currencies differ, the quote's validity and the treatment of unused funds. An undifferentiated amount labelled “1688 purchase” leaves finance unable to reconcile what it bought.

Record which suppliers and products the agent may pay for, how substitutions are approved and what happens if an item is unavailable. Do not give permission to move your funds to a new recipient without review. If the proposed destination is personal, use the personal-account checklist before approving an exception.

Keep evidence from both payments

Your transfer to the agent proves a different event from the agent's payment to the seller. Request the agent's receipt, the underlying order reference and evidence of the seller payment, with an item-level allocation for a combined purchase. Agree when you will receive warehouse intake and inspection records.

For a direct company invoice, keep the supplier-issued receiving instruction and check it against the invoice. The Chinese bank-detail guide helps organise that review. Confirm changed details through a separately verified company contact rather than the message announcing the change.

Ask about invoice payment without assuming checkout support

Use pay an invoice to ask A2vanta whether it can review the proposed company invoice and beneficiary. Send the purchase documents through its confirmed document channel and obtain acceptance and a quote before funding. Do not assume it operates your 1688 account, pays every buying agent or provides platform purchase protection.

After payment, obtain acknowledgement that the intended seller or agent credited the correct order. Keep that acknowledgement beside the purchase file. A completed transfer is useful evidence, but it does not replace the agreed goods, inspection and export records.
